THE FEAR OF FREEDOM

Just the other day I was driving and realized how free I was.

I also felt a tinge of nervousness: what if I’m lost and don’t know it?

Isn’t the nature of deceit that you’re so deceived you don’t even realize it?

There’s nobody taking care of me to assure me or correct me.

Even after we’ve left the church and changed our beliefs or lost our faith, the idea that we need to be under someone’s authority, protection, or guidance, is deeply embedded.

Even after years of living in freedom, the temptation to fall back in line for protection and direction can be strong.

Plus, the fear of doing something wrong having disastrous eternal consequences is the icing on this cake.

Not very sweet.
