Some of you requested that I write out the list of books that have most influenced me. So here you go. Understand that there are many authors that have impacted my life, and I will talk more about them in other posts… people like Eugene Peterson, C. S. Lewis, Zizek, and more. I am thinking of doing a book day where I talk about a book and its impact on my life.
Here’s the list:
1. James Breech, The Silence of Jesus (Fortress Press, 1983).
2. Henri Nouwen, Thomas Merton: Contemplative Critic (Harper and Row, 1981)
3. Thomas Merton, The Seven Story Mountain (Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich, 1948)
4. James Fowler, Stages of Faith (Harper and Row, 1981)
5. C. G. Jung, Memories, Dreams, Reflections (Vintage Books, 1961)
6. Wendell Berry, Home Economics (Farrar, Straus, Giroux, 1987)
7. J. Krishnamurti, The Urgency of Change (Harper and Row, 1970)
8. Chogyam Trungpa, Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism (Shambala, 1987)
9. Karl Barth, Epistle to the Romans (Oxford University Press, 1933)
10. William Stringfellow, An Ethic For Christians & Other Aliens in a Strange Land (Word Books, 1973)
11. ed. Lee Nichol, The Essential David Bohm (Routledge, 2003)
Wow. I just noticed that all of these books are anywhere from 25 to 79 years old, except for Bohm, but much of what was collected in the anthology is older.
To be truthful, it is difficult to find good meat these days. That’s why I usually turn to the philosophers, such as Zizek.
