Today’s Saturday Spiritual Supplement is a very simple one. But it is also very powerful. At least I found it so.
Years ago I was “between churches” as a pastor and working as a carpenter. It was providing income but I wasn’t happy. One day, at a conference, I spoke with a man about this very confusing period of my life. I didn’t know what I wanted to do. My future was a complete fog. I could think of no career that appealed to me. I couldn’t decide what I was really passionate about or what I really wanted to do. He looked me in the eye and asked me a very simple question:
What do you want people to say about you at your funeral?
POW! It hit me with such clear certainty. My top priority is to be a good husband and father. But he was speaking vocationally. And I knew what it was: I wanted to be remembered as the best pastor anyone could have. I wanted to be an excellent pastor, a man who could help people progress, mature and transition spiritually, a man who set people free from their entrapments into a freedom they had never experienced or known before, a man who assisted in people being happy with themselves and with life and courageous to live it compassionately. Yes! One simple question made me realize exactly what my mission in life is.
So what’s yours? How do you want to be remembered? Leave comments and share it with us…
