I like this quote from Hitchens’, God Is Not Great:
“Even though he (Socrates) was not in fact an atheist, he was quite correctly considered unsound for his advocacy of free thought and unrestricted inquiry, and his refusal to give assent to any dogma. All he really ‘knew’, he said, was the extent of his own ignorance. (This to me is still the definition of an educated person.)”
In summary, to be like Socrates:
- believe in God or not
- just think freely
- question anything and everything
- refuse to give assent to any dogma
- realize how much you don’t know
- expect criticism for this
Pass this on to a friend who you think will benefit from TLS.
Have a great day TLSers!
