Richard started the topic What should replace religion? in the forum Trying to Move On 1 year, 5 months ago
This is a very interesting lecture by Daniel Dennett on what should replace religion. Since non belief is the fasting growing segment in the spectrum of categories of value, this question has become highly relevant to those like us who have an interest in TLS. He does some excellent analysis of how to retain the good things that religion p…[Read more]

Richard started the topic Bertrand Russell was a wise and funny atheist. in the forum Atheism, Agnosticism & Science 1 year, 5 months ago
Here are a few quotes from Bertrand Russell British philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, and social critic.
If I were to suggest that between the Earth and Mars there is a china teapot revolving about the sun in an elliptical orbit, nobody would be able to disprove my assertion provided I were careful to add that the teapot is too smal…

I like to look at Kickstarter projects and I have supported some in the past. The idea of crowd sourcing really fascinates me.
I gave Paul Sammut some money to get his clock project started about a year ago and he sent me a really cool Nixie Tube alarm clock. Nixie tubes are old Russian tech that use tubes full of number shaped wires to d…[Read more]

Sometimes when I’m dialoging with theists I start to feel like the guy who points out all the scientific flaws in the Star Wars movies. The conversation can go like this…
“The space ship wouldn’t make any sound in space because sound doesn’t travel in a vacuum.”
“Well the microphone is inside the ship and you would hear the …[Read more]

This is a great talk on research done by Daniel Dennett on how to tell if you are an atheist. He also outlines his study on the number of pastors who are atheists and unable to tell anyone.

Richard started the topic The Lord Our Righteousness Church Cult in the forum Spiritual Abuse 1 year, 6 months ago
This is a series of blogs I did on this cult because it emerged from a Seventh Day Adventist group. I wanted to point out how the same reasoning process used to promote mainline religion is used to promote messianic delusions and pedophilia.
Included in the blogs is the video of the British Documentary and dialog in the comments from actual …[Read more]

Richard started the topic Challenging one's beliefs in the forum Atheism, Agnosticism & Science 1 year, 6 months ago
I have been thinking about the idea of having one’s beliefs challenged. I’m of the attitude that once I put something out there it’s rather unreasonable to expect everyone to agree or to not respond unless I have asked people to just listen. My closest friends challenge my statements and it often forces me to either change my mind or communicate …[Read more]

Richard started the topic Why atheists are no longer silent in the forum Atheism, Agnosticism & Science 1 year, 6 months ago
This is a video of an interview with Atheist Blogger Sharif Ahmed. He was tortured and nearly killed for his lack of belief. Even though this is happening in Muslim countries, it was not that long ago that Christians were doing the same thing. It seems that the Abrahamic based religions have a tendency toward violence.
In this time of fre…[Read more]

Richard started the topic The Gifts of Unbelief in the forum Atheism, Agnosticism & Science 1 year, 6 months ago
One of the reasons I really like living in unbelief is because it frees me from resentment. I don’t have to work out why god did this or did that. I don’t have to be mad at god because he allowed bad stuff to happen to me or didn’t come to my rescue when I needed him.
Other reasons.
I don’t have to worry about what god thinks of me.
I d…[Read more]

This equation on a T-Shirt stated that:
Truth + God = Life
This would mean that the following would also be true.
Truth = Life – God
Do the math.

I noticed I’ve been kind of intellectual lately and haven’t really been sharing any personal things. This is a video of my oldest son Greg doing his arrangement of Leonard Cohen’s song Hallelujah. It always brings tears to my eyes because it reflects times when I felt rejected by god when I still believed. I also love the background vocals he ad…[Read more]

As I have reviewed the threads on Biblical inerrancy and all the various dialogs on how to keep Christianity relevant without internal inconsistency I thought of Thomas Jefferson. He didn’t believe that Jesus was divine, but he felt that Jesus had some valuable things to say.
Among the sayings and discourses imputed to him [Jesus] by his …

George Orwell, the author of the famous novel 1984 said in a small essay that totalitarian regimes are essentially theocracies. Often atheism is blamed for the reason communism and other totalitarian regimes practiced such harm on the people they ruled. What George Orwell goes on to explain is that at the root of any totalitarian system, both r…[Read more]

I have really appreciated the dialog that authors like Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett, Christopher Hitchens, and Richard Dawkins have brought to our contemporary society. I maintain a dialog with my former church within an international forum. I do this as amends for teaching harmful beliefs to people when I was a believer.
There is a poster called fccool and he presents some rather brilliant observations. One such observation was this.
